Services and Tools Laboratory Services Animal Nutrition
Animal Nutrition

The Animal Nutrition Laboratory has the following objectives:

  • Provide support to INIA’s Research Programs related to animal production (Meat and Wool, Dairy, Pastures and Forages, Family Farm Production) providing information upon the nutritional value and chemical composition of forages, silage, hay and concentrates.
  • Research, through projects on nutritional evaluation of conserved forages and development of methods and techniques for analysis, within INIA’s Pastures and Forages National Research Program.
  • Providing service for the analysis of all types of feedstuffs (forages, silage, hays and mixed rations), to technical advisors, cooperatives and individual farmers.

INIA is making an effort in this last point to enhance the quality of the service provided to all of its users. The objective for INIA to provide services, is to make available to producers and technical advisors a tool easy to reach and low in cost, useful in formulating rations, feed supplements, and finding out the supply of nutrients from a pasture, amongst other uses;  having a direct impact on the animal production of the farm.

This Laboratory provides the following services to all of its users:

·         Information on the characteristics in Nutritive Value and Chemical Composition (energy, protein, fiber and minerals) of feeds and raw materials devoted to feed animals (rations, pastures, silage, hay).

·         Drawing up a Guide for the Feeding of Ruminants, in which the characteristics of the different feedstuffs available in the country are summarized (Publication: ‘Serie Técnica 142’).

·         Updating and training activities for interpretation of laboratory results, formulating rations and feed characteristics.

·         Handling a data base for feeds with a national coverage.

The information on the Nutritive Value is obtained from the chemical analysis at the laboratory where Crude Protein, Neutral Fiber, Acid Fiber, Energy, Dry Matter and Total Minerals, are determined amongst other components.

Available Analysis

The kinds of analysis which are provided by the Animal Nutrition Laboratory at INIA – La Estanzuela are the following:

  • Dry Matter: determines humidity content in a feedstuff.
  • Ashes: determines total mineral content.
  • Crude Protein: determines total nitrogen content, which if multiplied by a factor (6,25) will provide the Crude Protein content.
  • Acid and Neutral Fiber: determines the content of fiber and cell wall.
  • Nitrogen binded to Fiber or ADIN: determine the nitrogen which is bined to the fiber, mainly occuring in fermentation processes as in silages.
  • Ammonia Nitrogen, silage pH: determines stability and quality of reserved feed.
  • Phosphorus: Its percentage is detemined in the feed.
  • Estimations of Energy:  upon predicting equations.
